GSA works on providing:
-
a safe environment at GRHS. We strive for students to support each other and learn about homophobia, transphobia, and other oppressions,
-
education in the school community about homophobia, transphobia, gender identity, and sexual orientation issues, and
-
information to fight discrimination, harassment, bullying and violence in schools.
Benefits of the GSA:
-
Youth are coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning their sexuality at an early age so this club provides a safe place to express themselves.
-
Research shows that someone who is struggling is 2x more likely to report depression and suicide
-
More likely to report low grades, smoke, drink alcohol or use drugs and more likely to become victims of violence
-
More likely to carry weapons
.The Gay Straight Alliance is a club which promotes equality for all. We have created a safe environment for teenagers to be themselves. The GSA welcomes all newcomers, and offers fun activities and great discussions for everyone.
Over the year we celebrate several months and days in support of different LGBTQ groups:
- Equality Concert
- Celebrate Bisexuality
- National Coming Out Day
- Asexual Awareness Day
- Intersex Awareness Day
- LGBT History Month: October and February
- Transgender Day
- International Transgender Day of Visibility
- Day of Silence
- International Day against Homophobia
- Pride Month
